Ways To Avoid Mesothelioma Exposure

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that’s nearly always caused by being exposed to asbestos. In this disease, malicious cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers almost all of the body’s internal organs. Its most typical site is the pleura ( outer liner of the lungs and internal chest wall ), but it may also happen in the peritoneum ( the liner of the abdominal cavity ), the heart, the pericardium ( a sac that surrounds the heart ) or tunica vaginalis.

Mesothelioma exposure sometimes happens when people breathe or consume airborne asbestos fibers.  Asbestos is a natural compound and was at length used in producing a wide variety of products like cement, insulation apparatus, construction materials etc.  It is removed from natural sources and made into thin strands, which are then woven into threads before being put to economic use.  Its use increased significantly during the second World War in ship building and related war period activities and continued until regimes banned in depth use of asbestos after discovering the link between asbestos exposure and occurrence of mesothelioma.

Even though asbestos is highly beneficial it has a fatal drawback, ie it infects the protective membrane causing cancer. When the asbestos particles are inhaled it results in cancerous growth in mesothelium, the protective lining. It may take a long duration, even more than fifty years, for the disease to become noticeable through the symptoms. Many patients die from mesothelioma exposure due to this delay. The disease becomes so widespread before the cancer is detected.

Thousands of people have been affected by mesothelioma exposure so far. People living near places where asbestos extraction takes place, those engaged in its processing, those working in factories where asbestos is extensively used and family members of such workers who inadvertently comes into contact with the deadly particles which are brought home through cloths or hair are definitely under the risk of contracting mesothelioma. Preventive measures like wearing protective masks, changing cloths and taking a bath before leaving the workplace have been somewhat effective in preventing infection. But people who worked under asbestos filled atmosphere before these curbs came into place have no such luck. Many have lost their lives to this dreadful malady, but many others got their lives lengthened by some years by resorting to forceful curative measures.

mesothelioma exposure causes 3 kinds of cancer, usually pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma.  The pleural variety is the commonest while the pericardial cancer is the rarest but the most devastating.  Since the prognosis of mesothelioma isn’t really inspiring, it is exceedingly essential that each person who has come under asbestos exposure at some point of time go through proper medical checkups to note any damaging growth in the mesothelium.
